Are your daily habits harming your eye health? Read on to find out!

Did you know that your eyes are the most important features that people look at when assessing how beautiful your face is? Researchers have found that people mainly focus on your eyes when asked to assess facial beauty, giving us more reasons to take care of our eyes for that healthy bright-eyed look.

However, it has also been found that females are at greater risk of sight-threatening conditions (such as cataracts and dry eyes) than males. Furthermore, eye damage from UV exposure is especially high in Singapore. On a scale of 1 to 11 and above, the UV(ultra-violet) index indicates UV exposure from low to extreme levels, with sunny Singapore’s UV index being one of the highest worldwide at 11.5.

To add on to that, the average Singaporean spends a whopping 12.7h on our devices daily, exposing our eyes to further damage with all that blue light emitted from screens.

The numbers above may sound frightening, but the good news is that you can maintain and improve your eye health with the 5 tips we have for you below.

1. Incorporate eye superfoods into your diet

Having a well-balanced diet helps you get enough antioxidants for healthy eyes. If you’re only thinking of carrots, there more to it than meets the eye. Check out the top 5 foods that are great for your eyes!

2. Wear UV-protected eyewear

Don’t forget to grab a pair of UV-protected sunnies before heading out! Exposure to UV rays increases your risk of eye diseases like cataracts, and a good pair of sunglasses/glasses can help you fend off the UV damage while you are out. P.S: you can pull off the sunglasses as a hip fashion accessory with just the right fashion ensemble just like our favourite royal fashion icon, Meghan Markle, here.

3. Stop smoking

Smoking brings up your risk of heart diseases which can indirectly affect your eye health. Besides, exposure to second-hand smoke can also worsen dry eyes. Time to quit the stick, ladies!

4. Go for a comprehensive eye exam

In general, you should get a comprehensive eye exam to check for any abnormalities before you reach 40 years old. However, if you have a family history of eye disease or have an eye injury, you should consult your doctor for an eye exam early.

5. Reduce your daily screen time

If you belong to the 67% of Singaporeans who find it hard to break the habit of spending a lot of time in front of screens, don’t fret. Try starting with some habits like:· Avoiding screens for 30 minutes before bed· Have your meals without screens everyday

With these tips, we hope that you start cultivating good eye care habits. Putting the above into practice may take some time, but together, you and eye can do it for a healthier, brighter future!
